Volunteer Job Description

Duties:

• Greet taxpayers to create a safe, welcoming atmosphere
• Provide taxpayers with intake and survey forms to complete
• Ensure taxpayers have necessary documentation (e.g., W-2)
• Answer non-tax related questions
• Monitor and facilitate site traffic to enhance efficient services to all taxpayers
• Meet “qualifications” and complete “required training” listed below

Qualifications:

• Must be both personable and organized.  Great emphasis is placed on quality customer service.  Greeters are our “first line” team members
• Commit to volunteering a minimum of 20 hours during tax season
• Complete the IRS Standards of Conduct test
• Be a United States Citizen or in the United States legally

Required Training:

Volunteer Orientation (for NEW volunteers only)
Online session for NEW volunteers only.  Date and time to be distributed via email.

TAX PREPARER  TRAINING OPTIONS:

• Self-taught online.
• Limited classroom sessions offered online.  Dates and times to be distributed via email.

Tax Site Tax Preparer

Volunteer Job Description

Duties:

• Prepare basic 1040 tax returns and related schedules
• Prepare a correct and accurate return based on information provided by taxpayer
• Provide a copy of the completed return to the taxpayer
• Answer tax-related questions
• Maintain confidentiality of taxpayer information
• Ensure no compensation of any kind is accepted for the volunteer services provided
• Meet “qualifications” and complete “required training” listed below

Qualifications:

• Complete the free IRS Link and Learn online tax law course offered and become certified at the “Advanced” level
• Complete  the IRS TaxSlayer software training
• Complete the IRS Standards of Conduct test
• Commit to volunteering a minimum of 20 hours during tax season
• Be a United States Citizen or in the United States legally

Required Training:

New ASU Volunteers – attend the “Getting Started” Session in November

IRS Link and Learn Tax Law Course (for NEW and RETURNING volunteers) Available online or in-person must be completed prior to Volunteer Orientation

Volunteer Orientation (for NEW volunteers only)
Online session for NEW volunteers only.  Date and time to be distributed via email.

TaxSlayer software training.   A limited number of online classroom sessions will be offered in January 2024.  Volunteers will receive an email with the dates and times after the Volunteer Application is completed.

Tax Site Tax Screener

Volunteer Job Description

Duties:

• Ensure taxpayers have the required documents (e.g., photo identification, Social Security card(s), W-2, 1099s, last year’s return) for tax return completion
• Review the taxpayer’s Form 13614-C Intake/Interview & Quality Review Sheet for completeness and accuracy
• Based on the documents provided by the taxpayer and the completed intake sheet, determine if the return is within scope of the VITA/TCC program
• Answer tax-related questions
• Meet “qualifications” and complete “required training” listed below

Qualifications:

• Be an experienced, recurring volunteer tax preparer
• Have a previous VITA screening experience or have successfully completed  the Tempe VITA Screener training
• Complete the FREE IRS Link and and Learn online tax law course and become certified at the “Advanced” level
• Complete the IRS TaxSlayer software training provided
• Commit to volunteering a minimum of 20 hours during tax season
• Complete the IRS Standards of Conduct test
• Be a United States Citizen or in the United States legally

Required Training:

Screener/Quality Reviewer Training
TaxSlayer software and Screener/Quality Reviewer training sessions will be held in January 2024, some self-pace on demand option may be available online.  The dates and times will be distributed to you after the Volunteer Application is completed.

Tax Site Quality Reviewer

Volunteer Job Description

Duties:

• Conduct a quality review on all returns – Form 13614-C must be used to perform the necessary quality review action items
• Before asking the taxpayer to sign Form 8879 or the return, advises the taxpayer that he/she is ultimately responsible for the information on the return
• Explain to the taxpayer that signing the return guarantees that the taxpayer has reexamined the return and its accompanying forms and schedules for accuracy, and they are signing the return under penalty and perjury
• Provide feedback to volunteer preparers explaining identified errors captured during quality review and instructions for making the necessary corrections
• Maintain confidentiality of taxpayer information
• Ensure no compensation of any kind is accepted for the volunteer services provided
• Meet “qualifications” and complete “required training” listed below

Qualifications:

• Be an experienced, returning volunteer tax preparer
• Have previous VITA quality review experience or have successfully completed the Tempe VITA Quality Review training
• Complete the free IRS Link and Learn online tax law course offered and become certified at the “Advanced” level
• For more complicated returns, be certified in Health Savings Account, Military and/or applicable certifications
• Complete and pass the IRS Taxwise software training
• Complete the IRS Standards of Conduct test
• Complete Screener/Quality Reviewer Training
• Commit to volunteering a minimum of 20 hours during tax season
• Be a United States Citizen or in the United States legally

Required Training:

IRS Link and Learn Tax Law Course  available online – must be completed prior to Screener/Quality Reviewer Training

Taxwise software training.  A limited number of online classroom sessions will be offered in January 2024, some online self-taught options also available on demand.  Volunteers will receive an email with the dates and times. The dates and times of the sessions will be sent after the Volunteer Application is completed.

Tax Site Interpreter

Volunteer Job Description

Duties:

• Provide free interpreter services at Tempe’s VITA tax preparation site
• Be friendly, dependable and flexible
• Meet “qualifications” and complete “required training” listed below

Qualifications:

• Interpreters need only be able to carry on a conversation with taxpayers.  Although Spanish is the primary language requiring interpretation, the ability to interpret other languages is desired.
• Commit to volunteering a minimum of 20 hours during tax season
• Complete the IRS Standards of Conduct test
• Be a United States Citizen or in the United States legally

Volunteer Orientation (for NEW volunteers only)
Online session for New Volunteers only.  Date and time to be distributed via email.
